DyeForYarn is 10 years today and we'd like to share with you a little bit of our journey.
It all started about 11 years ago when Cordula and I, both working as researchers at the University Erlangen (in northern Bavaria), started knitting lace shawls. We discovered the world of Ravelry and, as it goes, became addicted to knitting.
Back then we couldn't find the yarns we were looking for - silk lace, hand dyed but solid - here in Germany, so we went online and stumbled upon Etsy. Soon after we ordered some hand dyed silk lace from overseas and were hooked. As researchers we had a lab at hand and much experience with experiments, so it came quite naturally to just try to dye yarn ourselves. We started with Tussah silk lace, the same that you can still find in our shop. We produced skein after beautiful skein and had the idea that we could open an Etsy shop and see if other people liked it as much as we do. Our names are based on Monty Python’s Flying Circus and John Cleese’s famous Ex-Parrot sketch. Cordula came up with the very fitting name DyeForYarn for our Etsy shop and soon after we also found our company logo, the Jolly Roger flag. It fit our black humour perfectly.
Well, the rest is history, as they say 😉.
We attended our first yarn fair in Leipzig in 2010 and we loved it! Later that year we attended Wollmarkt Vaterstetten and had our Logo printed on T-Shirts and a Flag (we had to leave both at home the year after, they were not amused 😆). At the end of 2010 we opened our second Etsy shop DyeForWool where we put all our woolly yarns. As we never have enough categories in one shop, we still have these two shops on Etsy.
After about 1.5 years after we opened our first Etsy shop, we quit our day jobs and started our own company DyeForYarn GmbH (which is the German equivalent of a Ltd.) and found a space in Fuerth that worked as dyeing lab, store and office. Everything still takes place there. 2015 Silvia joined our team to help with everything that needs to be done around our small company. And in November 2018 our dear little Isabel came into this world to brighten our days in the office. 💜
In the pictures we added some captions so you’ll get an idea what you’re seeing.
We hope you enjoyed this little DyeForYarn journey! We’d like to thank all our customers from all around the world for coming on this exciting trip with us and for supporting our dream! Cheers to you all, we love you! 🤗😊💕
